As a hiring manger for the last 10 years working for companies like Microsoft, CareerPath.com (Now CareerBuilder), and a half dozen other established and start up companies, I've interviewed hundreds of prospective candidates, and seen tens-of-thousands of resumes. I've tried everything to help me connect qualified candidates with open positions.
An inefficient job search hurts you and helps Monster
The sad fact remains that the job search industry thrives when candidates are inefficient at finding jobs.
Each advertised job gets more than 600 resumes. Less than 5% of all jobs are filled through advertising. Career sites like Monster, CareerBuilder, and others show job seekers less than 1% of current job available today!
The big job search boards don't encourage job seekers to utilize the best methods for finding work, in fact, they would have you believe visiting their sites everyday to search for and apply to jobs one at a time is the best method for finding work. In fact, it is the best method form them to make money from employers who advertise their jobs. What the job boards would have you do is actually the most inefficient way for you to look for work, yet it is the way they make the most money.
While the industry will slowly go through more consolidations, growing pains and technology maturity, the sad consequence is that an inefficient market rewards the big job boards and punishes the individual candidates.
Job searching that works for you
The best cure for job seekers is not to wait for the industry to change. My experience has shown me that when a job seeker takes control of the job search and makes practical use of tools and technology already available that the job seekers career will benefit greatly in the following ways:
- Save weeks or months on a job search
- Find at least 90% more job openings
- Employers and recruiters will search for & call you!
- Be invited to more interviews
- Feel more confident about the job you land
When individuals conduct a job search with their own best interests in mind, they do themselves the best service possible. It will also quicken the death of the inefficient job search market by forcing the industry to change to better meet the needs of job seekers.
Hiring managers want to find you, but when faced with an average of 600 resumes for each advertised job, and a plate already full of normal duties, it is quite hard to get their attention by just answering job ads on Monster and the other big job boards.
